ESE502 : The Class : Discipline : Techniques : Talking

Talking

Technique: Talking is a natural and powerful way of learning and consolidating learning. Socializing and structuring the learning/talking environment is the true key.

Procedures: Begin by reflecting about the behavior. Is the talking:

A. harmful and self defeating B. challenging values and expectations
If A, then 1. Set limits If B, then 1. Value student need to talk
2. Clarify consequences 2. Negotiate to meet class and student needs
3. Consistently enforce 3. Set up monitoring as a responsibility

Consequences that work:

  1. Student writes notes and keep a journal
  2. Small space away from others (student chosen and enforced)
  3. Other students agree and follow through with non verbal cue
  4. Student uses personal timer and check list to self monitor
  5. Lap top computer is used to update “running record” of thoughts
  6. Student devises ways to meet need and sets goals in motion

Classroom practices which lessen the problem
  1. Use cooperative learning groups
  2. Pair students and stop after major concepts to allow discussion and sharing of ideas and thoughts
  3. Teach note taking and provide point incentives for good notes
  4. Time for talking earned through cooperation
  5. Provide area away from others for talking and insist that any talking about the class concepts or emergencies be conducted in that area. Set limits for its use and monitor abuses.
  6. Develop teaching roles ( Content: Dialogist, Facilitator, Inquirer-Catalyst) beyond lecture to involved students in many learning activities. Then, when in lecture mode, remind students of their role as listeners. Lecture will be less frequent and students will be more able and willing to comply.

Medical concerns: Elective mutism is real. It appears to be more closely related to a control issue than a medical concern. Request a physical or findings from a medical exam. Then allow the student to be responsible for the talking and the teacher works on the trust.
