Sherlock and Pat: Goals

Become a Critic

Welcome to the mysterious world of Holmes and Watson. This module should be made for you! You like to think deeply about the things that are going on, to dig for insight, to really understand things at the core. Like Watson, you want to gather all the meaningful pieces and assemble a picture that is a true reflection of the facts and the heart of the matter.

The significant goals of this module include reaching an introductory level of skill, and if possible, adding a deep understanding of the humanity rather than just proficiency in covering the material. As you work on these concepts, you can methodically build a portfolio that encompasses the role of teacher, students and meets the mandates of the laws and regulations of IDEA 97.

The following points cover the goals for this module:

1. Recognize that each person is unique and special in important ways as well as similar to all of us in very discrete and discernible ways.

2. Demonstrate an understanding of normal child development and the educational implications for youngsters who differ markedly from growth norms.

3. List critical components of physical, nutritional, cultural and environmental factors that influence rate and quality of learning.

4. Learn to identify and name the ten categories of eligibility that mandate who will receive services through IDEA 1997.

5. Recognize specific characteristics that distinguish children and their needs in each of the ten services categories.

Naturally, there are a number of ways to demonstrate acquisition of this information and the concomitant skills. The following list includes ideas to attain this knowledge and evaluations to assist in self-assessment.

Level of Competency
P = Prior knowledge from previous course
I = Introductory	Awareness and initial knowledge.
C = Competency	You are able to discuss ideas from personal reference and in enough depth to provide examples during discussion or write a thorough essay including most major points.
M = Mastery	Understanding of the subject and ideas is so embedded that application of concepts and utilization of goals is second nature.
