You learned about various challenges children face as you read the text
and accessed the secret web files. Children with these challenges and
exceptionalities need education that is supportive. Now it is your turn
to reflect on what we know about students and the ways that educators
can make a difference.
Assignment:
In this 4-6 page paper [about 1000 words] explore some of the methods
used to move from "protecting" children by keeping them isolated
to our present mandate of balancing one child's needs with the needs of
the learning community.
A case study is similar to a snap shot.
Let us suppose you are interested in Autism. To present a case study
you would:
- Read a story or book about Autism, perhaps also watch a movie or documentary
clip
- Meet a child with autism and observe them at home and in school if
possible.
- Talk with parents or a teacher of a child with some form of autism.
- Research current information - Begin with medical definitions, read
the chapter in the book (pp. 522-531), review articles in journals -
Example Exceptional Children.
- Write the case study

the References, starting on p. 573 of the Smith text, and pattern them
