The philosopher Immanuel Kant in 1770 laid down the philosophical foundation for artistic Modernism
Kant's aesthetic:
- Viewers could and should arrive at similar

- to experience the art work in and of itself it would be necessary to

- personal interest
- associational responses
- consider art independently of any
- consider only the aesthetic
- aesthetic judgment should be
- neither personal
- nor relative
