Jerardo Cotuc es un indio maya. Habla maya, español y algunas palabras de inglés. Es el abuelo de una familia bastante grande. Tiene una hija soltera, tres hijos casados y veinticuatro nietos. Todos viven en tres casas, no muy grandes, que comparten (share) patios y pasillos. Por la tarde, cuando terminan la tarea y los trabajos de la casa, todos los más pequeños juegan alegremente en los pasillos. Cuando se murió su madre, él fue a vivir con un tío. Aunque nunca pudo terminar la escuela, el Sr. Cotuc cree en el valor de la educación.
