Consideraciones lingüísticas

Todos los idiomas vivos se encuentran en un proceso contítinuo de cambio. El españnol se divide en cuaro etapas hist%oacute;ricas: el español antiguo, desde su principio hasta 1500; el desarrollo del español moderno, de 1500 a 1700; el español moderno, de 1700 a 1800; y el español contemporáneo, de 1800 hasta hoy.

El español moderno ha cambiado del latín por medio del metátesis, aférisis, apócope, síncope y otros procesos fonológicos.

Hay varios tipos de cambios semánticos tambien: la extención, la reducción, el mejoramiento y la degradación. El idioma contiene cultismos, semicultismos, helenismos, anglicismos y préstamos directos, sin mencionar las palabras que llegaron al español durante la conquista.

En el caribe, por ejemplo, la gente indígena se ha desaparecido casi por completo por causa de la brutalidad de los conquistadores españoles y las enfermedades que consigo trajeron.

Sin embargo, el idioma de la gente indígena, combinado con el acento distintivo de la gente andaluza, ha creado un idioma único en la isla de Cuba.

1. Watch the video once without pausing. (It is only 30 seconds long.)
2. Make a guess as to what Roberto is talking about.
3. Listen a couple of times more to familiarize yourself with his speech patterns. You will find Christy's linguistic observations very useful.
4. Do what you do in English when noise drowns out what someone says, or when your mind wanders. Fill in the ________ based on what would make sense.
5. Jot down your ideas and listen again. You can run the movie "slide " back to listen to single words.
6. Still stuck? Read the vocabulary. Do any of the words fit in your "blanks? "
7. Listen again.
8. Read the Comprehension tips. Look at the biografical, linguistic, and cultural information. There are clues in each.
9. When you have done all you can, read the Spanish script if you need to. You'll notice that you can't read it and listen at the same time. This helps you focus on hearing and remembering.
10. Read the translation as a last resort, (before doing something dreadful to the equipment, for example). Notice that the translation is not word for word. Some ideas require more words in English than in Spanish, and some take more words in Spanish. Can you think of another way to translate what the person said to make it sound more natural in English?
