TOM SNYDER SIMULATIONS
I participated in a number of simulations; tv violence,
school prayer and genetically engineered food. I will
probably keep accessing this site for quite awhile. I
found all of the topics relevant and the three I chose
were extremely thought provoking for persons at almost
any age level.Yes, it was difficult to get started,
another challenge, but once I got started, it was hard
to stop.  I participated first in the TV Violence
simulation.  That was tough. It made me think about my
position a little more. Although all of the participants
presented their information emphatically and accurately,
I had to keep wondering, why is bedtime at 9:00 pm? I
had the hardest time with this as one of the
participants wanted the shows portraying violence on
after 9. Not that I enjoy violence, but I am in bed by
9:00.  We will not come to a conclusion that everyone
will agree on with this one, but Freedom of Speech does
allow us to heatedly disucuss and share opposing views!
The next simulation I participated in was the one
debating School Prayer. Again, a very accurate portrayal
of the various views regarding school prayer, and yes,
there was more than one participant at the table unhappy
with my decision. Some many things went through my mind
about making political decisions such as this. It is
difficult to separate the issue from the individual at
times; difficult to stay focused on the issue and how it
can affect so many. This one was very thought provoking
for me. I can see no end to this debate!  The other
simulation I participated in was the genetically
engineered foods simulation. I was not as pleased with
this one with regards to the altneratives given for the
audience to choose. I think there should have been
another category for "making sure that the food is
safe". This one was somewhat off the mark. I think
labelling foods means something to those who are
somewhat nutrition-minded but to others, in the majority
of the Third and Fourth Worlds, who maybe starving, who
reads a label? who cares, its "food"? I would like to
spend more time and energy on this one.  I briefly want
to comment on the debriefing sessions. I thought the
opportunity to view and actually draw a political
cartoon was brilliant. It absolutely appeals to those
creative, brilliant minds, who love visuals!
