Levels of Support
- Intermittent
- "as needed" Intermittent supports are characterized by their episodic
nature. A person does not always nee the support, or short-term supports are
needed (for example, during a transition period). Intermittent supports can
be either high or low intensity. mild mental retardation
- Limited
- Characterized by consistency over time. These supports may be time-limited
but not intermittent. Limited support may require fewer staff members or be
less costly than more intense levels of support. moderate mental retardation
- Extensive
- Characterized by regular involvement with the individual in at least some
environments. For example, a person may need daily assistance in home and
school environments. Extensive supports are not time-limited. severe mental
retardation
- Pervasive
- Characterized by constant need for support that is high intensity, provided
across environments, or are life-sustaining in nature. Pervasive supports
typically involve more staff members and are more intrusive than other supports.
