Moving Files with FTP (File Transfer Protocol)

The Problem:

Have you ever been in any of these annoying situations?

1. You need to save your work but don't have a floppy disk.
2. You're working on a computer that doesn't have a floppy disk drive (like an iMac).
3. The file you need to work on at school is on your home computer.
4. The file you need to work on at home is on the computer at school.
5. The file you created is too big for a floppy so you can't move it to another computer?

The Solution:

At NAU, when you obtained a DANA (student) account, one of the things you got is a special network storage space called the "PC" folder (also sometimes referred to as the "Z Drive"). You can access this network folder with your DANA username and password, and you can store up to 50 megabytes of stuff there. You can upload and download your stuff to and from this PC folder using any computer with Internet access, so long as you have an FTP program.

If you're using Windows and Internet Explorer, you can FTP directly from your browser window.

Otherwise...

Downloading the Software:

So where do I get an FTP program? FTP software is already installed on all the lab machines in CEE. As an NAU student, you can also download your own free copy of Fetch (for Macintosh) or WSFTP (for Windows) for your home computer by following these easy steps...

1. Connect to the Internet from your home computer.

2. Type http://www.nau.edu/its into your web browser.

3. Click the Software Downloads button on the left side of the screen.

4. Click on either the link for Windows Software or Macintosh Software depending on what kind of computer you are using.

(If your computer has an Apple Menu in the top left corner of the screen, it's a Macintosh. If it has a Start menu in the bottom left (usually), it's a Windows machine.)

5. When prompted, enter your DANA username and password to access the downloads page.

6. Download Fetch for Mac or WSFTP for Windows

7. Install the Software according to the instructions on screen.

Connecting to the Z Drive:

First connect to the Internet. Then run WSFTP (Windows) or Fetch (Macintosh). You will be presented with a window that asks for the name of the Host (dana.ucc.nau.edu), your DANA username and password (you know these but I don't), and the Directory you wish to open (PC). This is how it will look in Fetch (top) and WSFTP (bottom) just before you click OK.

Once you have connected, you can move your documents to and from the PC folder on the network. Good luck!
