Importing Images to HyperStudio

Note: This handout only describes the technical "how-to", but does not address copyright issues. Remember that while "fair use" for educational purposes may apply, it's proper to ask permission of the publisher before using an image and to give credit to the photographer unless an image or movie is in the "public domain".

To get an image from the Internet:

1. Open Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer.

2. When you find a picture you want, move your mouse to the middle of that picture and (on a Mac) click and hold or (on a Windows machine) right-click.

3. A pop-up menu will appear, and you will have the choice of copying the image to the clipboard or of saving the image to a disk.

4. You may then immediately paste the image into your HyperStudio stack or import the picture from your disk at a later date.

To get an image or movie from a LaserDisc, DVD player, VCR, or Camcorder:

1. Go to an AV Macintosh or a PC with a video grabber card.

2. Connect your video source (Laserdisc, VCR, camcorder) to the video input of the computer. Use either an S-VHS cable (a single black cable with a round connector) or RCA cables (Yellow for video, Red for right channel audio and white for left channel audio*).

*Actually the colors don't matter; all 3 cables are the same. This is just a convention. Do be sure that you use the same color at both the device end and the computer end however.

3. Open your HyperStudio stack.

4. Your video image may be added either as a "Graphic Object" or as "Clip Art". Graphic objects can exist in different layers, and cannot be erased with the paint tools. Clip art imports the image as "paint", which can be modified pixel by pixel. Use the arrow tool to work with graphic objects. Use the paint tools to work with clip art.

5. For a Graphic Object, go to the "Objects" menu and select "Add a Graphic Object". For Clip Art, go to the "File" menu and select "Add Clip Art".

6. When asked "Where do you want to get your picture?" select Video.

7. Cue up your video and start it.

8. Click on OK when you see the image you wish to capture. Lasso the part of the image you want and click on OK.

10. You can now move the image anywhere you want on your card.
