File Sharing in Windows

In this example, we will create a shared folder on a work machine that we can access from home.

A. On your work machine...

1. Create a folder on your desktop and name it something easy to remember.

2. Right-click on the folder.

3. Select Sharing and Security... from the menu.

4. Select the Sharing tab.

5. Click the Share this folder button.

6. Click the Apply button.

7. Click on Start/Control Panel/System (from the "Classic" view) or right-click on My Computer and select Properties...

8. Select the Computer Name tab and write down the full computer name.

B. On your home machine...

1. Connect to the Internet and the NAU VPN.

2. Choose Start/My Computer

3. From the Tools menu, choose Map Network Drive...

4. Select a Drive letter (S: for share, or W: for work, for example.)

5. Type the path to the share, as in \\server_name\share_name and click the Finish button. In the example above, the path would be: \\instrdev112.instrdev.nau.edu\instrdev112_share

Note: Your home machine might not have the same login name and password as your work machine so be sure to click on the different user name link and verify the login info. You should be using your work machine's login info.

6. Log into your work computer as shown.

7. The shared drive should now show up under Network Drives in the My Computer window.
