Internships!
Time after time and year after year students are faced
with what to do once they have graduated.
Most students’ objectives are to get a job;
however, the problem that arises is how to
get a job without any experience. One way
to gain this needed experience is to do an
internship. Here are 6 good reasons to do
an internship:
1. Use your degree/diploma
Choose an internship that will apply to your
academic field and will allow you to better
your chances to work in a career that fits
your educational background.
2. No experience needed
Most jobs today require some previous experience
in the selected job field. However, applying
for an internship means that you will gain
valuable experience that will help you when
you are ready to enter the workforce. An internship
will give you the hands-on experience and
knowledge to help you become a successful
professional in your field of work.
3. Learn from a mentor
Besides gaining needed experience, you will
also have an opportunity to learn from a professional
in your academic field. Internships can provide
valuable ‘mentors’ that may help you along
in your professional career. Your internship
mentor will be able to give you evaluations
that will help you grow as a new professional
and you will begin building your professional
network, which is a very important aspect
of your job search plan.
4. Create and learn new talents
An internship will provide you with opportunities
to gain new skills, which will be an asset
to yourself and your resume.
5. Make a difference
Employers are always looking for fresh new
ideas to keep their company on the cutting
edge. An intern can bring the ‘fresh, new’
ideas, thus giving you the chance to show
how you can make a difference! The economy
is ever-changing and new faces are entering
the professional world everyday. An internship
is your first chance to make the best use
of your talents.
6. Improve your prospects to gain employment
Many times internships can lead into a professional
position at your company. However, even if
your internship does not turn into a full-time
position, your new acquired experience can
be used to highlight your skills when applying
for jobs in the future!
Don’t wait…tell your student to apply
for internships today and gain that experience
they will need to enter the world of work!

Parent
Story
"When
my daughter entered NAU in Fall
of 2002, the biggest worry was the
fact that
she didn't know anyone at NAU.
No one from her high school in California
had ever gone to NAU. She
had to start fresh. It turned
out to be no problem at all.
The dorms make it easy to meet people,
plus all the outside groups - band,
sports teams, etc. - expand the
friendships. She is
now a very busy sophomore and
enjoys her college experience.
The transition to college was easier
than expected, and she is really
doing well in the classes in her
major."
