The
End is Coming! The End is Coming!
Well, the time is coming, and it seems to be coming very
fast. Of course, I'm talking about the end
of the year, and this may be the end of your
student's first year or fifth. Either way,
there are things you can do as parents to
help them out.
First of all, students do have finals in a little
more than two weeks, so don't get angry because
they haven't already made plans to move home
(if they are). Right now there are much more
important things going on, so let it slide
a little bit. Also, different groups on campus
offer different packages that help the overburdened
studier, so you might want to do that. Best
bet is to check with Student Life (928-523-5181).
If they aren't offering anything, they can
direct you. If you don't want to send a prepackaged
offering, do something else. In the past my
parents have sent food to my house or to my
residence hall room, and it's a very nice
surprise. Rather than spend time on "Where
am I going to eat?" and actually going, I
got to spend time actually studying (true
story).
Graduation is a mere 23 days away (May 7) which is also
the day the residence halls close. This weekend
call your student, and confirm what they are
doing, and when they are doing it. You see,
the weekend is the time to relax, and we won't
snap at you for calling. I promise on behalf
of all students. Anyway, talk to your student,
because they may be relying on your help to
move, or they may not have even thought about
it. Either way, it's crunch time in the semester
and whether we will admit it or not, all students
need a little bit of help in any way, shape,
or form. Also, big reminder, Flexi does not
transfer over to next year, so make sure your
student liquidates any remaining funds picking
up all sorts of food.

| NAU President John Haeger Announces
NAU Restructuring Plan
About
500 faculty and staff attended the campus forum Monday
to hear President John Hager's plan for academic restructuring.
Subject to approval by the Arizona Board of Regents,
the restructuring will reduce NAU's schools and colleges
from ten to six to streamline academic programs,
research and teaching and focus on our mission and
strengths.
The
restructuring also will save about $1.4 million over
the next several years.
The
reorganization combines two recommendations made by
a faculty committee in January. "The short-term benefit
is to save dollars," Haeger said. "However, the long-term
solution is to create a structure that focuses our
efforts on the future."
Under
the plan, NAU schools and colleges would be reorganized
into: science and engineering, humanities and fine
arts, social and behavioral sciences and communication,
business, education and the consortium of professional
colleges and schools, which would include health professions,
hotel and restaurant management and forestry. The
university's 40 institutes and research centers will
be distributed among the six new units.
If
approved by ABOR, implementation could begin in July.
The details of the plan can be found at www.nau.edu/reorg.

Taxes!
I'm sure all of your students have remembered,
or you reminded them, but just in
case they've forgotten, remind them
that they must file their taxes by
tomorrow! They can go online and file
and e-file through www.irs.gov,
but to avoid penalties they need to
do it.

Parent
Story
"When
my daughter entered NAU in Fall
of 2002, the biggest worry was the
fact that
she didn't know anyone at NAU.
No one from her high school in California
had ever gone to NAU. She
had to start fresh. It turned
out to be no problem at all.
The dorms make it easy to meet people,
plus all the outside groups - band,
sports teams, etc. - expand the
friendships. She is
now a very busy sophomore and
enjoys her college experience.
The transition to college was easier
than expected, and she is really
doing well in the classes in her
major."
