Now that school is well underway, the crowds at the NAU Bookstore have thinned out a bit. Now is a great time to encourage your student to visit the NAU Bookstore and take a little extra time to look around and become familiar with all of the products available. If you student wants to show some school spirit the Bookstore has NAU merchandise - everything from key chains and sweatshirts to notebooks and water bottles. It is a great time to pick up NAU merchandise for holiday gift giving this winter. If your student enjoys reading for pleasure, you know books other than text books they are in luck because the Bookstore has a large selection of fiction and non-fiction books. This week in sports: NAU football is playing host to Cal Poly on Saturday at 6:05 pm. Swimming and Diving host Pentathlon at 2 pm on Friday, September 26.

It's one month out from NAU's 79th annual Homecoming, "Aloha NAU," and we at the alumni office have started living the part. Of course our media-drenched minds tend to stray toward popular renditions of Hawaiian culture. Consider, for instance, the "Hawaii Five-O" influence:

Special Events Staffer: "We got the DuBois Center for our casino night and silent auction."
Supervisor: "Book 'em, Dano."Then there are reunions, a la "Lilo and Stitch":Reunion Coordinator: "Ohana means family. No alumni family gets left behind."And finally, our little tribute to Don Ho:Puzzled Catering Taster: "These bubbles aren't tiny enough."But whether your cup of poi is Michener or blue Elvis, hula back to campus for the lumberjack luau of a lifetime! For further info on Homecoming events, call 888-628-2586 toll-free, or check out the event schedule at http://www.naualumni.com /Events/EventsMain.cfm.

If you will be in Flagstaff October 4, and would like to volunteer between 8 am and 1 pm, the University would like some help from parents for the OCID (On Campus Information Day). Please contact Charlene Mann at Charlene.Mann@nau.edu for more details.

You've probably talked to your student since the beginning of the semester. If you have a humorous story to share with other parents, send it to us to publish in an upcoming edition of the BackPack. It can be about your freshman adjusting to college life or a quote from your fifth year that makes it evident they have been here too long, either way, let us know. We want to hear from you and share some of your stories. In a future issue of the Back Pack we will profile some of these (If you don't want your name included let us know!) to share with everyone. If you already sent one last week, please send it again, the email address has been fixed. You can email us at Parents@nau.edu.

Also, make sure to check out our Parents Association website at www.nau.edu/parents. You can find all sorts of information ranging from contact numbers for all officers to even a fledgling archive of the BackPack, this wonderful email! So check it out and let us know what you think at Parents@nau.edu!
