Refer to the diagram (attached) of acute asthma attacks, resulting in hospitalizations, for the town of Smokeville, USA. (Cases only are in diagram, and lengths of stay are exaggerated so that you can read them!)

Assume the your total population and your population at risk are the same, =500 persons. (Do you know why this might be appropriate here?)

For simplicity, let's also assume that each case represents a unique individual, not a repeat hospitalization of the same case.

Answer the following questions.

1. Calculate the prevalence of acute asthma attacks at the time of the survey on July 1, 1992.

Prevalence = _________ cases per 1000 persons, or _______%

2. Calculate the incidence rate for acute asthma attacks from January 1, 1990 to December 31, 1995.

Incidence rate = __________ cases per 1000 persons.

3. Based on your observations above, which of these data (incidence or prevalence) would provide an estimate of risk of hospitalization due to acute asthma attack?

4. You don't have the money for another incidence study. For health planning, what might you do to get an updated idea of risk for asthma attack?
