Module 6. Intentional Plagiarism

Sometimes plagiarism is due to the erroneous or incomplete citation of the sources consulted. The most serious form of plagiarism, however is the submission of another's words with your name on it. This is not only dishonest, it is criminal.

Borrowed Papers
It is never appropriate to put your name on a paper written by a friend or classmate and submit it for a grade. Even if the original owner gives you permission to use it, doing so is still plagiarism. Even if you use the paper as a first draft and revise it, it is not original and is therefore considered plagiarism. In addition, keep in mind that both the borrower and the lender are equally guilty of plagiarism.

Purchased Papers
There are free lance copy editors that will identify your grammatical and format errors for a modest fee. This is not plagiarism. There is an abundance of "writing assistance services" that sell custom made papers for a modest fee. Writing a paper for you does not constitute "assistance." It is plagiarism.

Pasting Passages from the Internet
Many writers take notes from online readings by cutting key passages and pasting them into a working draft. This is called "patch writing." Properly paraphrasing, quoting or citing these sources is not plagiarism. However pasting entire passages without acknowledge of the source is. Professors use various detection devices that will alert them to this type of plagiarism.
