Module 7. Consequences

The penalties for plagiarism are determined by classroom, academic unit (i.e. the College or Department) and university policies. It is your responsibility to know and understand them.

Most instructors state the penalties for academic dishonesty in their course syllabus. The penalties may include a failing grade on the assignment or for the entire course. Some instructors may require the submission of your work to a plagiarism detection tool like Turnitin.

A teacher or student can report suspicions of plagiarism directly to the Department Chair, the Dean, or to the Office of Student Life. The penalties for formal complaints include:

Plagiarism is a very serious form of academic dishonesty and is not taken lightly by the University or the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice.
