Teaching/Research Emphases
Intercultural Communication: analyses of the dynamics involved in communicating across lines of difference. Utilizing critical communication theory and qualitative methods, the nature and implications of cultural struggle and transformation are emphasized.

Cultural Studies: theories of culture focusing on the power of communication in constructing our senses of self, social relations and the world. Mass media, popular culture, gender and environmental practices are emphasized.

Rhetoric: theories of discourse addressing whether and by what mechanisms discourse functions "persuasively" (i.e., has effects and is imbedded in the world). Contemporary and critically-oriented approaches to textual analysis are emphasized.

Current research program: critical analyses of intercultural and human-environmental relations in the southwestern U.S. with an emphasis on various forms of 'rock art.'
