Planning Basics
Module one has been designed around the topic of "basics." These are the history, theory, some of the individuals, and concepts/processes that form the cornerstone of much of planning. This is not meant to be absolutely comprehensive or detailed, rather, this module introduces these items in an abbreviated manner (many of these topics could be a semester long course by themselves). These topics can serve as either an introduction to planning as a field or as a review of important facts for the AICP exam. Because the students in this course vary from no planning background to practitioners, something for everyone has been included. Additional sources are also listed for you if should wish to read more at a later date.
Please consult the syllabus. Each of the topics includes a reading list
(remember, either it's one of the texts or it's on electronic reserve
at Cline - see the library
link), and things to think about as you are reading.
Assignments:
There are three written assignments during the time period allotted
to Module 1. Two opinion papers (OP 1,2) will be due. Remember, these
are approximately 4-5 paragraphs in length. Be concise, but thorough.
You will post these at the virtual conference center by 5 pm Thursday
of those weeks designated in the syllabus.
The module assignment (MOD 1) is to be written upon the completion of
the readings and other assignments required by a particular module. Your
responses to the questions asked should be 2-3 pages, not including the
section on "current situations" which is based on your own experiences,
current news, or other sources. Make sure you read the syllabus.
If you have a personal calendar, you should write the dates assignments
are due in it - this will really help you stay organized.
