STA 474c - Introduction to Mathematical Statistics II

Prerequisites:   A grade of C or better in STA 473c.

Catalog Description:   Principles of statistical inference, estimation, and hypothesis testing.

Goals:   STA 474c has as its primary goal the development of the mathematical theory that forms the basis for statistical inference procedures, including estimation and hypothesis testing.

Objectives:   Upon successful completion of this course you will be able to:

1. Recognize problems of estiamtion and decision making.
2. Use the language and techniques of probability to solve statistical inference problems.
3. Understand the theory of techniques taught in applied statistics.
4. Continue the study of statistics in advanced courses.

Course Content

1. Estimation
A. Unbiased estimation
B. Maximum likelihood estimators
C. Consistency, efficiency, and sufficiency
D. Confidence intervals
2. Hypothesis testing
A. Simple and composite hypotheses
B. Likelihood ratio tests
C. Tests on means and variances
D. Chi-square tests

3. Selected topics from regression and analysis of variance

Homework assignments	20%
Three "mid-term" examinations	20% each
Comprehensive final examination	20%

Grade Policy:   Grade cutoffs will be no higher than:   A greater than or equal to 90%; B 80-89%; C 70-79%; D 50-69%; F less than 50%.
Examination Dates:   Exams are (tentatively) scheduled for Wednesday February 16^th, Friday March 18^th, and Friday April 29^rd.
Final Examination:   The final examination will be given on Monday, May 9^th, 10:00am-noon -- the time scheduled by the University.
