DRUM LINE

The NAU Lumberjack Marching Band maintains a membership of approximately 150, with each season beginning in mid-August with a week-long pre-season marching band camp.  In the Fall of 2003, under the direction of Ms. Nola Jones, Interim Associate Director of Bands, the NAU Marching Band traveled for performances at Arizona State University, an Arizona Cardinals football game, and for an exhibition performance with the Bands of America festival at Bank One Ballpark in Phoenix, Arizona.  NAU is the host for the 2005 Southwest Bands of America Regional Championships.

The Marching Band hosted NAU's 2003 Band Day with 38 bands from a four-state region vying for ratings and state qualification.  The band enjoys homecoming with a parade and visiting regional bands joining the NAU band for a half-time extravaganza.  Family weekend brings parents to the game to participate in the parent/band member shadowing at the Pre-Game Show.  The band truly enjoys the comfort of rehearsing in the climate-controlled Skydome sports facility and playing in the stadium stands where seating has been removed to accommodate the percussion section.

Mr. Wardell King has written the percussion arrangements for NAU and has instructed (in collaboration with Dr. Hemphill) the pre-season drum line camp for the past three seasons.  Student leadership within the drum line is active and vital to the success of both the musical and technical aspects of the drum line's performance standards.

The NAU drum line performs on Yamaha marching percussion instruments, Sabian cymbals and Vic Firth sticks & mallets.
