The University
Dominated by the majestic San Francisco Peaks, Flagstaff
is situated in the Coconino National Forest at an
elevation of 7,000 feet. The elevation, the clean air,
Arizona sunshine, and the protection provided by the
forest give the city an unsurpassed climate year-round.
Northern Arizona University, established in 1899, and
often referred to as “The Mountain Campus,” now serves
over 19,000 students with a branch campus in Yuma and
nine other field sites throughout the state.
The
School of Music is an outstanding component of
the University system. Thirty-seven full- and part-time
faculty serve the school. The purpose of the School of
Music is to help students gain an understanding of
music, including increased musicianship, scholarship,
technical proficiency, and aesthetic awareness, and to
prepare students for traditional performance and
teaching careers, for graduate study, and for
alternative careers in today’s society.
With approximately 300 majors, the School of Music
offers undergraduate degrees in music performance, music
education, conducting, composition, and music history
and literature; graduate degrees in music performance,
music education, conducting, and music history.
Teaching opportunities in percussion are available for
qualified music majors through the NAU School of Music
Preparatory School. Performance ensembles are
open to all university students regardless of major.
