The University

Dominated by the majestic San Francisco Peaks, Flagstaff is situated in the Coconino National Forest at an elevation of 7,000 feet.  The elevation, the clean air, Arizona sunshine, and the protection provided by the forest give the city an unsurpassed climate year-round.  Northern Arizona University, established in 1899, and often referred to as “The Mountain Campus,” now serves over 19,000 students with a branch campus in Yuma and nine other field sites throughout the state.

The School of Music is an outstanding component of the University system.  Thirty-seven full- and part-time faculty serve the school.  The purpose of the School of Music is to help students gain an understanding of music, including increased musicianship, scholarship, technical proficiency, and aesthetic awareness, and to prepare students for traditional performance and teaching careers, for graduate study, and for alternative careers in today’s society.

With approximately 300 majors, the School of Music offers undergraduate degrees in music performance, music education, conducting, composition, and music history and literature; graduate degrees in music performance, music education, conducting, and music history.  Teaching opportunities in percussion are available for qualified music majors through the NAU School of Music Preparatory School.  Performance ensembles are open to all university students regardless of major.
