How to Download Apple's "CDLink" Application
CDLink is currently downloadable from worthpublishers.com.
History of CDLink: In the mid-90's Voyager Corporation developed a helper, called CDLink that allows remote servers to play local compact disks by means of html files. Voyager distributed this software for two years free of charge. In 1997 Voyager was sold to Learn Technologies Interactive and discontinued its FTP site for CDLink. In a message of 11/5/98 Peter Durnin, Technical Director at LTI responded to my inquiry as to who owns CDLink: "Sorry, CDLink was not part of the Voyager catalog which LTI acquired. It was discontinued prior to our involvement. I do not know of any plans to make the software available publicly." Todd Fahrner, one of the creators of CDLink also wrote indicating that he does not know who owns CDLink.
Persons interested in learning how to create vcd files with CDLink may refer to my ATMI presention of October, 1996.
How to Configure your Browser to Recognize VCDs
After you've downloaded CDLink, you'll need to add support for the link's new MIME type in your browser. Here are the instructions for: [Netscape 3.0] [Communicator] [Explorer]
NETSCAPE NAVIGATOR 3.0
- Pull down the Options menu to General Preferences.
- Click on the Helpers tab.
- Click on "New"
- In the Description and MIME type boxes enter: application/x-cdlink
- In the Suffixes box enter: vcd
- Click the application radio button
- Click the Browse button and navigate to CDLink Kernel (not Voyager CDLink) in the folder that Voyager downloaded to your hard disk.
- Click OK.
Now go back to Netscape and find one of the musical examples. After inserting the
proper compact disk, click on the "Play" link or the example itself. The computer
will beep and indicate that it can't find the application. Click to find the
application and navigate to CDLink Kernel (NOT Voyager CDLink!). If you happen
to navigate to Voyager CDLink you may need to re-install Netscape to correct
the mistake.
NETSCAPE COMMUNICATOR
- Pull down the Edit menu to Preferences.
- Double-click on "Applications" in the scroll screen to the left.
- Click on "New"
- In the Description and MIME type boxes enter: application/x-cdlink
- In the Suffixes box enter: vcd
- Click the application radio button
- Click the "Choose" button and navigate to CDLink Kernel (not Voyager CDLink) in the folder that Voyager downloaded to your hard disk.

INTERNET EXPLORER AND WINDOWS 95
(instructions courtesy of Jeff Kay and CJDevelopment at http://www.cjd.com/
- Expand the .hqx file you downloaded at the top of this page. Please note that it is not possible to expand an .hqx compressed file with a ZIP uncompress utility. You must use StuffIt Expander for Windows (free from TUCOWS). Once you have Stuffit Expander installed on your PC, drag the downloaded CDLink.hqx over the Expander windows and you will get a working copy of CDLink.exe. In Stuffit Expander you will have to choose a destination directory where the expanded document will be sent to.
- Launch the Explorer or click on My Computer
- Under View, click Options
- Click the File Types tab
- Click the New Type button
- Under Associated Extension type ".vcd" (with out the quotes)
- Click the New... button
- Within the dialog box, within the Action text area type "run", click the Browse... button, locate the file "Vcdlink.exe" click on it.
- Click the OK button
- Click the close button.
- You may choose to type in a description, I suggest "Voyager CD Link"
You are now ready to play your compact disks via the Web!
