Newly formed Department of Theatre (formerly Theatre Division) of the College of Fine Arts

After a year off as the Coordinator of the Theatre Division I was elected by my faculty to be the first Chair of the newly formed Department of Theatre.

Duties: Assist the Dean of the College of Fine Arts by supervising the Department of Theatre budgets, curriculum, academic assignments, class schedules, scholarships, and Theatre faculty meetings. I Evaluate faculty for promotion, tenure, retention and merit purposes. I provide a forum for discussion of all relevant issues and a clear channel of communication between the SPA Dean and the faculty. I am a member of the university Academic Chairs Council and the CoFA Dean's Administrative Council.

Theatre Division Coordinator

1989-1990,1991-1993 and Spring 1999 to Summer 2000.

An administrative position with a rotating term.

Duties: Assist the Dean of the School of Performing Arts by coordinating the Theatre Division's budgets, curriculum, academic assignments, class schedules, scholarships, Theatre Division faculty meetings, providing a forum for discussion of all relevant issues and a clear channel of communication between the SPA Dean and the faculty, and all other duties as assigned by the Dean.

Duties: Designer of sets and props,(Lighting Designer and Technical Director until 1990) and scenic artist for up to four Theatre Division and two Opera Theatre productions a year. Supervise student scenic designers and props and paint crews; teach Introduction to Theatre Design, Theatre Design I, Theatre Design II (theatre graphics), Theatre Design III (computer applications for theatre), Theatre Design IV (scene design), and Asian Theatre. I have also taught Lighting Design, Stagecraft, Scenic Painting and Introduction to Theatre at NAU.

  • Phi Kappa Phi “Faculty Award 2001-2002”
  • Awarded the Kennedy Center/American College Theatre Festival  Excellence In Theatre Education Award” 2000.
  • School of Performing Arts “Centennial Teacher of the Year,” 1997-1998 academic year. One of eleven faculty from across campus (out of 1168 faculty) to be chosen for this honor.
  • Received a 1998 Instructional Development Grant from the Office of Teaching and Learning Effectiveness to develop a WEB site for my courses and my portfolio gallery. I attended one-on-one workshop with the staff of the Faculty Computer Lab located at the OTLE during the spring and summer.
  • In the summer of 1994 I was awarded an Instructional Development Grant for $2000.00 to develop a new course on Asian Theatre, a new Liberal Studies course for the Theatre Division. TH 351 Asian Theatre was first taught on Instructional Television in the spring of 1995.
  • Awarded a Wakonse Fellowship in 1994. The Wakonse Fellows are dedicated to quality teaching in higher education in the USA. I attended the 1994 Wakonse Arizona Conference on teaching at Camp Tontozona, Christopher Creek Arizona.
  • I was a member of the Citizens Ambassador Program's Theatre Education Delegation to the Peoples Republic of China in November 1993. I received $ 4500.00 in instructional and professional development grants to finance the trip.
