Explains and predict individuals' decisions about health behavior.

Explains behavior as a result of intention. Examines the factors that affect intention including external factors ( family, friends or co-workers) and internal factors (personal belief system). |

Explains the degree to which individuals believe that their health is controlled by internal or external Factors |

Stages of Change Theory (Prochaska)
|
People go through stages when changing troubled behavior: precontemplative, contemplation, preparation, action, maintenance, termination |

The perceived newness of an idea determines an individual's reaction to it. The main elements of the theory are the innovation, communication channels, time, and the social system. Awareness...interest...trial...decision...adoption. |

Explains and predicts health-promoting actions. |

Encourages planning with the desired outcome in mind and working backwards to determine what precedes the outcome. Intervention is targeted at the preceding factors that result in the outcome. |

Social Cognitive Theory (Bandura)
|
Human cognition is the mediator between stimulus and response so that the individual is in control over behavioral responses to stimuli. |
