Quantitative Methods

Objectives:
Define and identify independent and dependent variables.
Define internal and external validity.
Discuss factors that increase or decrease internal and external validity.
Discuss the role of control, manipulation and randomization in research.
Given a research scenario, identify the dependent, independent and extraneous variables.
Define: validity, reliability
Differentiate between internal and external validity.
Differentiate between intra-rater and inter-rater reliability.
Define random selection and random assignment and give examples.
Define and discuss the importance of single, double blinding.
List several threats to validity and ways to control them.
Develop a hypothetical research project using:
true experimental design
quasi-experimental design
non-experimental design
Give an example of a retrospective study.
Define and discuss the advantages/disadvantages or uses of: crossover, parallel arm, split mouth, pre-test, post-test, washout period.
Differentiate between in vivo and in vitro research.
