3. Have an official report of scores on the General Test of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) sent to the NAU-Y School Counseling office. GRE information is obtainable at 1-800-gre-call, or online at www.gre.org.
Completed application files are reviewed and admission decisions are throughout the year. Contact the School Counseling program at NAU-Yuma for additional deadline information. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that his or her application file is complete.
The materials in the applicant file
are evaluated by faculty using an objective, multi-criteria system. Points
are assigned for each applicant using the following weighted percentage
associated with each criteria:
(a) 50% Academic Aptitude for Graduate
Study (GRE scores and GPA),
(b) 15% Life Experiences (autobiographical
questions),
(c) 15% Work Related Experiences
(relevant paid and volunteer work),
(d) 10% Potential to Contribute to
Profession and Program (professional activities and letters of recommendation),
(e) 10% Goodness of Fit to the Program
(areas of focus congruency, fit to CEE mission, and professional characteristics)
Each applicant is ranked within the
applicant pool after points have been assigned. Approximately twenty persons
are scheduled to be admitted each year. Admitted individuals must begin
the program as stated above. Individuals unable to begin during the semesters
specified, must re-apply to the program.
Program of Studies Policies
The attached program
of study is the agreed-upon plan between the student and faculty advisor
on completing program requirements. It is used as a verification document
when the student applies for graduation. The student should complete the
program of study with his or her advisor during the first semester of graduate
work. The original, signed program of study should be given to the Area
Chair to be placed in the student’s file in the Educational Psychology
Area and copies should be kept by the student and advisor. Amendments with
advisor approval can be made to the program of studies during the student’s
course of study. There is a time limit for completion of the master’s degree
as stated in the Graduate Catalog, “You must complete all requirements
for your master’s degree within a six-year period. If you take courses
from other institutions and transfer them to your program at NAU, they
must also be taken within the six-year period” (p. 51, 1998-2000, Graduate
Catalog). There are provisions for renewing credits and petitioning to
extend the six-year limit.
Transfer of Credits Policies
Regarding transfer
credits to NAU master’s degree programs from other institutions, the NAU
Graduate College regulations state, “The number of hours transferred from
other institutions may not exceed 25% of the total minimum semester hours
required for a master’s degree” (Graduate College Memorandum, November
19, 1993). “To be considered for transfer credit, your courses must: (a)
have been earned with a grade of A or B (we will accept a pass grade if
the course is graded only on a pass/fail basis.), (b) have been earned
within the six-year period required for completing your degree at NAU,
and (c) be applicable to a graduate degree at the institution where the
credit was earned.” (p. 44, 1998-2000, Graduate Catalog).
For students who have a graduate
nondegree standing, the NAU Graduate College regulations state, “Normally
you may only apply 12 credit hours of appropriate coursework taken in nondegree
status to a graduate program.” (p. 17 1998-2000, Graduate Catalog). For
students seeking a second master’s degree, the regulations state, “With
the approval of your committee, you can use up to 9 hours of coursework
from a previous master’s degree to satisfy the requirements for a second
master’s degree at NAU. You must meet all program requirements for the
second master’s degree and all but the 9 hours must be earned at NAU.”
(P. 51, 1998-200, Graduate Catalog). It is best to inquire directly
about previous NAU coursework by calling the NAU-Yuma School Counseling
Office at (520) 317-6131.
