Chapters 39 and 40 are about ecological topics. The Department of Biological Sciences offers a
couse in Ecology (Biology 226). If you would like more information, contact the Biology Advisement Office at 520-523-9304. Several biology faculty members teach this course during the year.

1. Using Figure 39-2, compare the temperature curve and the atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration of the earth. Make a prediction about the trends of these two curves. 1 point.

2. Do a search on the web and find peer-reviewed articles to substantiate the graph in Figure 39-2. 1 point.

3. The tundra biome has been called a “cold desert.” How can this be? Find a web site about tundra. Give the address of the web site and answer the following questions in one paragraph. What environmental conditions are described. What plant life is there? What animal life is there? 5 points.

4. Estuaries are referred to as “nurseries of the sea.” Why? Give four examples of organisms that use estuaries as “nurseries” to support your response. 2 points.

5. Find a web site which discusses reasons that estuaries are becoming endangered. Please submit the address of the site. 1 point.
