The American Indian Air
Quality Training Program:
I am the PI and Director
of this program, which is funded by the USEPA Office of Air and Radiation
and operates through NAU's Institute for Tribal Environmental Professtionals
(ITEP). This program has four
major elements:
- nationwide training workshops
- on-site professional
assistance, a professional exchange program, and a National Tribal
Forum Series
- a K-12 outreach program
for schools serving Native American students
- a Tribal Environmental
Resource Center.

Greater Phoenix Metropolitan
Area Air Toxics Project - Phase I
I am a faculty advisor on
this project, which involves preliminary research on existing air toxics
studies and their applicability to a planned project for the Greater
Phoenix Metropolitan Area. I work with Dr. David LaRoche of NAU's Center
for Sustainable Environmentals, two undergraduate research assistants,
and a Steering Committe consisting of members of ADEQ, Maricopa and
Pinal Counties, USEPA Region 9 and USEPA-OAQPS, the Intertribal Council
of Arizona, the Gila River Indian Community, the Salt River Pima Maricopa
Indian Community and the Fort McDowell tribe. The outcome of the Phase
1 project is a "blueprint" for an actual, large-scale study
of air toxics in this region.
International Projects:
The CET
International Club is for all students interested in international
careers, starting with student exchange programs. As a member of the
CET International Committee, it is my goal to assure that CET students
with an interest in broadening their education to include an international
experience are able to have the best possible study abroad experience.
Each spring, ten CET students
(and faculty) make an "informational" trip to our partner
institutions in Germany (Dresden, Zittau, Goerlitz) and the Czech
Republic (the Czech Technical Institute). This trip allows students
to visit campuses, attend classes, and meet local students; we also
take various cultural excursions (hiking, tours to industry, Berlin,
local museums and castles).
CET also has direct relationships
with engineering schools in Jonkoping, Sweden and Bergamo, Italy.
Australia is easy and always popular. We are currently working on
expanding our engineering-focused program to includes universities
in Spain and France.
In addition, both CET and
foreign students are eligible to obtain the CET International Certificate,
which is awarded with your B.S. degree, and provides tangible proof
of your additional (and valuable) international skills.
During 2002-2003, I will be
on sabbatical at the HTW-Zittau/Goerlitz in Zittau, Germany. My project
title will be "Implementation of an Integrated University Controlling
System Considering Quality, Environmental and Risk Aspects: A Pilot
Study in the Federal State of Saxony, Germany."
