East Asia and Central Asia - Japan

Asuka

The Asuka era began with a century of profound change as elements of Chinese civilization flooded into Japan, initially through Korea. The three most significant Chinese contributions to the developing Japanese culture were Buddhism with its attendant art and architecture, a system of writing and the structures of centralized bureaucracy. The arrival of Buddhism also led to some formalization of Shinto. Horyu-ji the oldest currently existing wooden building in the world –dates from this period.
