By 1200 CE India was already among the world’s oldest civilizations. At the start of the late medieval period 1200 to about 1600, these three religions continued as the principal focus for Indian art, even as invaders from the northwest began to establish the new religious culture of Islam. Buddhism gradually died out in India under the Islamic onslaught.
