South and South Ease Asia - India

South India

In the southern part of India the Early Andhras ruled from 73-25 CE, where initially Buddhism was a major inspiration for art. Further south was the land of the Tamils where the Pandyas and Cheras ruled since early times. The major contribution of the Tamils during the early times was the Sangam or the academy where literature and prose were written in the ancient Tamil language. Some of the classical writings from this time included the Tolkappiyam (Tamil grammar); Silappatikaram (The Jeweled Anklet) by Ilanko Atikal, and its sequel Manimekalai (The Girdle of Gems) a Buddhist work by Cattanar. The Later Andhra dynasty ruled much of the southern and central India into the second century CE.
