In a Different Place: Pilgrimage, Gender and Politics at a Greek Island Shrine
Princeton University Press 1995
This book examines pilgrimage to the famous shrine of the Madonna of the Annunciation on the Greek Island of Tinos and the ways in which such pilgrimage reflects the intersection of religious, social, and political life in contemporary Greece. The book also explores the author's own pilgrimage, as a woman, an anthropologist, and a scholar engaging such contemporary issues as postmodernism, feminism and "writing culture."
"Intellectually and emotionally affecting, this book performs in a novel way the classic anthropological task: taking a small segment of the world's social cultural experience and using it to reflect on the contemporary human condition. It is a remarkable work." -Michael Herzfeld, Harvard University
