Communities are almost always identified by dominant vegetation. However, animals are also present and comprise an important part of the functional community, e.g., in old-growth forests in the range of the northern spotted owl.

1. What is the earthworm associated with these forests?

2. What would you hypothesize the earthworm eats?

3. In what ways is the action of the earthworm important to the health of the old-growth forest?

4. Suggest (hypothesize) two other organisms in this forest with which the earthworm could compete. Explain your choices.

5. What information would you need to obtain in order to determine if competition among these three species occurs? How would you obtain it (what experiments)?

6. What is a likely predator on the earthworm from among the species listed in this forest? Justify your choice.
