1. The coastal marsh (c.f., Fig. 8.17, page 186) is an ecotone. Describe the "ecological structure" of the coastal marsh: definition, characteristics, species, etc..

2. What is the ecological importance of the coastal marsh (i.e., its contribution to community diversity, community stability, community function)?

3. What is the value of the coastal marsh to human activities? Explain.

4. How is the concept of health applied in an ecological sense to the coastal marsh, i.e., what does it mean to be a healthy or unhealthy coastal marsh?

5. Examine the sample map for the Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge in South Carolina. Using this map, how healthy do you estimate this coastal marsh to be: healthy, some localized problems, pervasive deterioration? Explain.
