DUE: 4-Feb-2000. Work sent after this date will receive a grade of zero.
1. Countercurrent circulation patterns are adaptations for oxygen uptake (Chap 3) and heat conservation (Chap 10). How does such a system in fish gills prevent the establishment of equilibrium and, therefore, allow higher oxygen uptake than if water and blood flowed in the same direction?

2. Homeostasis works by negative feedback.

a) What is the difference between negative feedback and positive feedback?

b) Give an example (not involving hemoglobin) of how negative feedback helps a particular organism achieve homeostasis.

3. Almost all habitats contain enough variation in structure and conditions that this heterogeneity is considered to be microhabitats within the larger habitat.

a) Describe a habitat which contains microhabitats and how a specific organism uses behavior to adapt itself to these microhabitats.

b) Describe another variable habitat and how another organism changes its structure to adapt itself to the habitat's variations.
