PowerPoint for Office 97/98

1a. If PowerPoint is not running, double-click on the PowerPoint icon and choose "Template" from the window. Click OK.

 

1b. If PowerPoint is already running, choose File/New...

2. Under the Presentation Designs tab, single-click on the listed designs (a preview will appear at right) and when you find one you like, click OK.

 

3. From the AutoLayout choices, select a slide that resembles a title page and click OK.

4. Your slide will appear on the screen. You can edit the slide by clicking inside the text box and typing.

5. You are currently in "Slide View" mode. Click on the "Outline View" icon in the lower left corner of the screen to switch to Outline View mode. You will see a #1 and a slide icon. Hit the Return key a few times to make more slides. Give each slide a title. My first slide is entitled "Blah, blah, blah".

6. Now click on the Slide Sorter icon and you will see all of your slides. Simply drag slides around to change their order in your presentation.

7. Click on the Slide View icon to return to Slide View mode. You can move between slides using the scroll bar on the right side of the window. To create a new slide while in Slide View mode, choose Insert/Slide from the menu.

8. On the current slide, highlight some text by dragging the pointer over it. Choose Format/Font and the following text options will appear. Try changing font or style, size or color.

9. On the current slide, highlight some text by dragging the pointer over it. Under the Slide Show menu, choose Preset Animation and select one of the effects. Switch to Slide Show mode using the Slide Show icon in order to see the animation.

10. In Slide Show mode, click the mouse to move to the next slide. Push the Escape key to return to Slide View mode.

11. Under the Insert menu, choose Picture/ClipArt... to put a graphic object into your presentation. The same principle applies for charts and graphs. You can get more clip art from the Microsoft website...

12. Explore the menus. There are lots of features we haven't examined, but you now know enough to get around on your own.
