The 2003 Art and Archaeology Workshop in the Verde Valley

The Goal: Better understanding of prehistoric peoples and the places they lived and worked. Art and Science belong together. Both entail detailed observation. The systematic observation required of science is essential to discovery. The aesthetic response provides its own kinds of discovery, valuable for its own sake, but also provides new hypotheses, new ideas.

The Team: Archaeologist Kelley Hays-Gilpin (Northern Arizona University), artist and teacher Jane E. Jones (Dallas, Texas), Crow Canyon Archaeological Center (logistics), and 15 wonderful "students" from Colorado, Texas, and New York.

The Paintings: done on the fly, most in less than 20 minutes, record our impressions, feelings, observations, and discoveries.
