Surfaces differ because 1) pottery is hand-formed, then polished while damp with a smooth stone but floor tile is machine made and much more uniform, and 2) pottery was used with stirring sticks or ladles that gradually chip away at the surface or wear it away. Floor tile is a softer, shinier material that shows very linear gouges and scuff marks.
