Little Leaf Mountain Mahogany

DESCRIPTION: a medium sized, xeric shrub. A member of the rose family, Little Leaf Mountain Mahogany is a sub species of Curl-leaf Mountain Mahogany. It is native to Colorado, but given its low water needs and according drought tolerance, can be found throughout the American Southwest. Its leaves are small, fine textured, and needle-like. They have a shiny, dark green coloring. The flowers are very small and yellow. The flowers and leaves are found on its erect and densely compact branches. The wood has a light gray bark and is very heavy and hard. It is sometimes used in cabinet making. Deer and elk eat the flowers and leaves, while rabbits frequently dig their resting hollows at the base of the shrub.
