Striper Fishing Is A Passion

I found a new passion around 1999, and it is called Striped Bass fishing or "Striper" fishing. One of the most explosive inland fish I have ever caught! I mainly fish Lake Powell reservoir that is located partially in Arizona, and mostly in Utah. This lake has more shoreline than the state of California has ocean shoreline, and has a habitat of naturally spawning Striped Bass. In fact the Striped Bass population does so well that it is hard for anglers to keep them in balance even with a no limit catch regulations in force! I have also fished for Stripers in Lake Mead, Lake Mojave, and Lake Havasau! I started learning more and more about Lake Powell by staying in tune on a web site that a fish biologist from The Utah Fisheries Division, named Wayne Gustaveson, started as a fishing report several years ago. The site  http://wayneswords.com/  is the most informational  site available to learn about the Striper fishing, and other available species in Lake Powell!

November 12, 2004 fishing with John Lassandro we took Stripers with three different techniques. Trolling. jigging and casting topwater lures in the Padre Bay area of Lake Powell. A majority of  fish were in the 5 to 7 pound class.

Next trip below was Chris Michels and I fishing the New Antelope Marina from the Houseboat slips. Mainly we fished at night using a  4 ft. Hydro-glo fishing light. We did do some trolling during the day, and caught a few nice ones that way, and from a few large topwater boils right in the marina itself, but most fish were caught at night! I don't have any night pictures, but the cooler full that Chris is displaying was from the last nights catch! October 16th, 2004!

We had a great invitation from McIllains who let us tie up to the back of there houseboat the Millenium Falcon, and who served us pulled pork, mashed potatoes, asparagus, and tossed salad on real China plate ware! We in turn for our gratitude gave them 15 stripers to deep fry up for their next nights dinner! Thank you Charles and Gail!! Oh BTW Jeff Bierer and I went up the next week, and rented a slip at Antelope Marina, and ended staying right beside Charles and Gail again. The night fishing was not as good, a cold front had came through, and we only caught little stripers at night! But the Fettuchini with Cream Clam Sauce that Gail made for us, made us soon forget about the fishing, not to mention Charles bar tending!

September 26, 2004 fishing by myself and shadowing John Lassandro around in his boat. This trip Chris couldn't make it up, and I started fishing Padre Bay area on Friday afternoon with a few boils happening in the evening that produced some nice Stripers. I went out again Saturday morning, and worked Padre Bay to the back of Gunsight! While I was jigging some Stripers and Walleye up in Last Chance, I heard a loud roaring noise coming up the canyon. I thought it was a big cigar boat, but when I looked it was a big Boat Plane coming in to land! That was a site to see and hear, and the Plane ended up in the back of Last Chance where the occupants decided to go swimming by jumping off of the wing into the lake water!

I happened upon John while I was trolling the cliffs by the Dam, and waiting for the evening boil at Anchovy Point that had been going on for a week now! John was there for the same reason, and we had a good laugh about that. The boil started at about 6:10 p.m. and lasted for only about 30 minutes! We were able to catch a dozen fish out of it with the biggest at five pounds! On Monday morning John, and I chased stripers around, and got into some in Navajo in the a.m., and we took a break mid day to come back out for the evening boils again. I gave Wayne Gustaveson a call and coerced him into coming out with me that evening to fish the boil!
