Rapier & Buckler Lessons

This series of lessons will cover 8 weeks. The topics of defense and offense using the buckler as well as variations to the standard wards should be covered. These lessons should be started after the Introduction to the Rapier Lessons.
 

FIRST LESSON
Introduce the buckler.  The Italian brocchiero, targa and rotella shold be covered.

1. Introduction
Talk about history of carrying and using a buckler. Discuss Marozzo's technique.
2. On Guard Position
Show the right and left leg forward stances. Discuss the pros and cons of using either with the four primary guards of Agrippa/Fabris.
3. Have students practice movement and the various guards.
 

SECOND LESSON
The students should be able to successfully move and take up the various guards. Teach parrying with the buckler.

1. Practice movement to warm up.
2. Practice parrying with the buckler.
 
 

THIRD LESSON
The student practices buckler parries.

1. Practice parrying with the buckler and at the same time thrusting or cutting with the rapier.
 


FOURTH LESSON
The student practices stesso tempo defense using foot movement (incartata, etc) to avoid the attack while at the same time closing the line with the buckler.

1. Practice parrying with the buckler while using foot movement to gain a better counterattack angle.
 
 
 

FIFTH LESSON
General practice. The instructor should monitor the student's progression and correct any problems.

SIXTH LESSON
The students are introduced to offensive actions with the buckler.

1. Introduction
The students are introduced to attacks with the buckler.
2. Practice attacks with the buckler.
 
 
 

SEVENTH LESSON
The students are introduced to the rotella if one is available for practice.  If rotellas are not available further practice should be made with the buckler or targa.

1. Introduction
The students are introduced to technique with the rotella.
2. Practice defense with the rotella and counterattacks.
 
 

EIGTH LESSON
Review.

1. Introduction
The students practice use of the buckler for defense and offense. Further supporting information from the masters should be given.
