1. Information on genetics is the material that was missing in Darwin's work. Why? 1 point.

2. Explain the X-Chromosome mosaic patterns found in calico cats. 2 points.

3. Why can a female be a carrier for color blindness
and hemophilia but not a male? Find a web site
about sex-linked inheritance. List another example of this type of inheritance. Is there Y-linked
inheritance? Explain and cite examples.

4. If a species of animals has 23% of its DNA using the nitrogen base T, what percentage would the
nitrogen base G represent? 2 points.

5. Why is it not possible to have single letter codons? Why not double letter codons? How did
scientists figure out that the code had to be triple letter codons? How is the genetic code redundant?(tab. 8-3) 5 points.

6. If the DNA gene sequence is TAC-ATA-GCA-CCC-ACT determine the mRNA, the tRNA, and the amino acid coded for (use tab. 8-3 & figs. 8-20 & 8-21).

7. What are the great fears about genetic engineering in humans for people not familiar with genetic
engineering? 1 point.

8. How can PCR be used in a court of law? 1 point.

9. What are the three most important agents for damaging DNA? Which ones of these are you most
likely to come in contact with? How can you reduce your exposure to these agents? 5 points.
