Etiology

Abnormally high blood glucose level resulting from lack of insulin production

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Predilection

Type/IDDM= peak age of onset 20 year of age

Type II/NIDDM=onset 40 year of age or older

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Location

Systemic disease

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Clinical Appearance

Accelerated atherosclerosis resulting in impaired circulation of blood

Increased risk of ulceration, gangrene of the feet, high blood pressure, kidney failure and stroke

Retinopathy

Neurologic complaints

Decreased resistance to infection

Slow wound healing

Xerostomia

Exaggerated response to bacterial plaque

Periodontal disease difficult to control

Radiographic Features

Control blood glucose levels

Insulin or oral hyperglycemic agents
