Suppose you met a person who found out that you are taking an ecology class. She moved to town a year ago and tried to grow vegetables in her garden, but with very poor results. She does not know if she is watering enough or using enough fertilizer.

Using what you have learned about the scientific method and environmental factors, design an experiment that will determine if water or fertilizer is limiting growth of the vegetables in her garden.

1. Describe how you ran (what was the design of) your experiment. Specifically, how did you determine whether the vegetables were limited by water, by fertilizer, or by both?

2. Assuming that you find that plant yield was affected by water and fertilizer, explain how you would determine how much of each to advise your new acquaintance to apply to her garden.

3. What hypothesis would you suggest to explain the relationship between the growth of the vegetables and the water applied? What is an alternative hypothesis?

4. What is the control group in your experiment?
