The San Francisco Peaks near Flagstaff, AZ, and Mt. Graham near Tucson, AZ, are isolated mountains surrounded by desert. The plants and animals living on the tops of these mountains are the same as those living in the vast Rocky Mountain range.

1. Using your knowledge of environmental factors (i.e., the range of a factor in which organisms can survive and prosper) and the history of these factors in the past, how would you explain the presence of the fauna and flora of these "mountain islands" and their similarity to each other? What source(s) did you use for reference?
