The starling was mentioned in the textbook (pg 302, 316) for its rapid spread across the United States after being introduced from Europe. It is common for such an invasive species to change its distribution as it disperses from source populations to favorable new habitats.

The changing distribution of one population inevitably has subsequent effects on the distributions of other populations previously resident in the new habitats. This process is so significant that the United States Geological Survey coordinates information on invasive species.

1. Pick a species which is (potentially) changing its distribution and post it to the assignment database. Do not duplicate species.

2. Describe the habitat requirements of this species. What source(s) of information did you use?

3. Where is this species native? Where has this species become an invader? What source(s) of information did you use?

4. Name a species which is native to the invaded habitat, which is in danger of becoming a "sink population" as a result of the introduction of the invader. What source(s) of information did you use?
