1. On March 1, 1999, KAET-TV aired an episode of "The American Experience" that told the story of the flu epidemic in the US in 1918 in which over 600,000 people died.

What similarites might there be between this flu-human interaction and Ricklefs description of the myxoma-rabbit interaction?

2. Sickle-cell hemoglobin may be an example of coevolution between the human species and a widespread parasite.

a) Describe the disease of plasmodium caused malaria.

b) What is the hemoglobin S (HbS) mutation and what happens to the people who have it?

c) How could the hemoglobin S mutation and malaria be an example of coevolution?

d) What information would you need to determine if this species interaction is a case of coevolution?

e) Suggest another pair of species, not discussed in the textbook, that might be an example of coevolution. Explain your choice.
