Most bacteria encountered in the envionrment are "beneficial" components of naturally functioning ecosystems. However, a few pathogens cause lots of trouble.

1. Some bacteria are natural symbionts with human beings. Name two locations where bacteria are found naturally in or on the human body. What function as symbionts do these bacteria have?

2. When bacteria enter the body through a cut in the skin, what are three ways the immune system responds to such invading bacteria?

3. Most antibiotics interfere with protein synthesis or RNA synthesis specific to prokaryotes (i.e., they specifically disrupt bacteria but have no effect on people). Name one antibiotic and the step in prokaryotic protein synthesis with which it interferes.

4. Exposure to an antibiotic may result in populations of bacteria which are resistant to the antibiotic. How could the bacteria develop this resistance?

5. Why do you suppose that antibiotics are completely ineffective against a virus?
