I. DATA COMMUNICATIONS

A. Data Communications: the combination of telecommunications and data processing. Refers to the electronic transfer of computer information from one computer to the next via direct cable connections (local area network) or via telecommunication links (wide area network).

B. Computer Network: the linkage of computer systems by means of communication lines or channels.

C. Advantages

1. information accessed and transmitted quickly

3. centralized management and decentralized operations

4. links business processes performed by independent computer systems

6. flattens the organizational hierarchy
